Group Advocates for Bajans to Monetize Online Content

The prospect for Barbadians to monetize online content on global platforms is becoming increasingly promising. This opportunity hinges on a new lobbying group’s initiative to dismantle prevailing geo-blocking restrictions that currently hinder Barbadian creators from earning on major digital platforms like Google and TikTok.

Group Advocates for Barbadian Online Content Earnings

Michelle Smith-Mayers, the Executive Director of the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries (BCSI), recently shared insightful developments. During the Coalition’s 3rd Council of Leaders meeting at Warrens, she revealed that BCSI has organized a task force to delve into the restrictions preventing Barbadians from generating revenue from global digital platforms. Platforms such as Google, Facebook, and TikTok are currently off-limits for Barbadians aiming to earn through content creation.

Smith-Mayers emphasized the urgency of addressing these restrictions. “Our geo-blocking project team aims to tackle the monetization limitations faced by Barbadians. Although content creators can upload games and other digital content to Google, earning from them remains an obstacle here. Surprisingly, creators in other Caribbean nations like Saint Lucia and Jamaica do have this earning capability,” she explained.

Barbadian Creators Left Behind in Digital Revenue

This issue extends beyond content creation, impacting the broader spectrum of digital commerce and trade. Many Barbadians actively engage in online platforms like Facebook and TikTok, yet they can’t convert their creativity into income. In stark contrast, others globally have leveraged these platforms to build significant wealth.

Currently, individuals such as David Davis, known for sharing popular content focusing on his family stories, remain unable to capitalize financially from thousands of views due to geographic limitations. Imagine the opportunities if these restrictions were addressed!

Support from Government and Key Stakeholders

In a strategic move, BCSI has crafted a policy paper and submitted it to governmental bodies. This initiative garnered support from the Prime Minister and influential public service stakeholders. Smith-Mayers mentioned, “A cabinet paper is underway, and the Prime Minister has shown her support.” The momentum continues as BCSI collaborates with Economic Affairs, aiming to establish a lobbying group dedicated to championing Barbadian interests.

Consequently, a specialized technical team is also being formed to guide the lobbying group, ensuring clarity and understanding of Barbados’ objectives in this matter. The end goal is simple yet significant—enabling Barbadians to rightfully earn from their innovative online content.
