Google Cloud Unveils New Blockchain RPC Service

Google Cloud has made a significant stride by launching a new Blockchain Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service, which is set to revolutionize how developers interact with blockchain data.

As of now, the focus of this innovative Google Cloud service is on the Ethereum blockchain. Announced on September 17, 2024, the tech giant plans to broaden this support to other blockchain networks within the coming year. Initially, the service is available for free, allowing up to 100 RPC requests per second and a total of one million requests daily. The service adheres to the EIP-1474 standard RPC methods used by Ethereum nodes, and it is fully compatible with Ethereum’s JSON-RPC standard. This makes it easy for developers to integrate with Ethereum-based DApps with minimal coding effort.

Challenges in Ensuring Blockchain RPC Reliability

According to Cointelegraph, Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs) are vital protocols that enable one program to request services from another over different computers or networks. In the blockchain context, RPCs are essential for Decentralized Applications (DApps) to communicate and process transactions effectively.

Google Cloud has acknowledged that RPC reliability is a persistent challenge many developers face. Even minor delays or errors in RPC responses can significantly impact DApp performance, necessitating nearly instantaneous transaction processing. Such issues become more pronounced during high network activity, resulting in transaction volume spikes.

A case in point occurred in June 2024 when ZKsync, an Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution, experienced severe delays and reduced functionality due to high network demand and RPC provider issues.

Previously, Google Cloud had launched its Web3 Portal on April 25, which includes a suite of blockchain development tools. Despite this initiative, feedback from the crypto community has been mixed. Some users criticized the portal’s user interface, while others were dissatisfied with the lack of support for major blockchain ecosystems like Bitcoin.

Google’s new blockchain RPC service represents a leap forward in improving how developers interact with blockchain data. It’s a promising step toward addressing the existing challenges of RPC reliability, thus boosting the efficiency and performance of DApps.
