Kara Beutel’s Path from FBI to Successful Cruise Planners Travel Advisor
The expression “the path to success is not a straight line” could not be truer for Kara Beutel. This Pennsylvania wife and mother of two transitioned to a prosperous career as a Cruise Planners Travel Advisor after dabbling in various professions, including a spell with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Today, Kara thrives, booking over seven figures in travel annually. However, her journey to this rewarding career wasn’t straightforward.
Boasting degrees in Nutrition, Criminal Justice, and Chemistry, Kara initially embarked on a career in medicine and then spent five years with the FBI. Despite her impressive credentials, she lacked a sense of passion in her roles.
As a mother, Kara yearned for a career that was professionally satisfying yet flexible enough to allow her to be present for her children. Reflecting on her priorities, Kara mentioned, “I don’t want them to remember me as the mom who was always working and always ignoring them.”
This desire led Kara to join her mother, Tracy Bonetti, in the family travel business. Tracy founded their Cruise Planners franchise in 2001, presenting them with numerous travel opportunities. Kara fondly recalls a childhood memory: “I remember doing homework on a four-night cruise when I was 11.”
Initially, Tracy was hesitant when Kara expressed interest in joining the business. Tracy explained, “I said ‘NO!’ For two reasons: just because I wanted her to give one more year to her business at the time. Also, I didn’t want to ruin our relationship; we’ve always gotten along so well.” But Kara’s determination won out, and after a year, Tracy agreed.
The Transition to Taking Over the Business
Nearly six years later, Kara has successfully taken over the business, allowing Tracy to retire. Reflecting on their partnership, Kara noted, “Working with [my mother] actually went so much better than she anticipated. There were things that I brought to the business that she hadn’t considered, so there were new ways of looking at things.”

Whether she’s dropping the kids off at school or spending quality time with her husband, Kara values the flexibility of being her own boss. “My kids are little at this point, so I am in a season of life where my focus is more on them than it is on growing the business,” Kara says. “But as they get older, that will shift, and I have watched that shift happen with my mom.”
