Remote Working Differences Between Genders Unveiled in New Study
Juggling between a conference call and school runs often presents a dilemma for remote-working parents. A recent study reveals significant gender differences in how men and women handle work-from-home challenges. Men tend to prioritize job commitments over domestic duties, while women place considerable importance on family obligations.
According to Durham University Business School, the study examined the experiences of individuals working remotely, emphasizing how they manage boundaries between professional responsibilities and personal life.
Impact on Work-Life Balance
The findings indicate that women frequently value taking work breaks to attend to family needs, in contrast to men who often find such interruptions frustrating. One male IT worker noted that family inquiries typically involved technical issues rather than offering a simple gesture like a tea break.
Women, however, appear more appreciative of the opportunity to address family matters even during work hours. The study reveals that men are less inclined to let their work be interrupted by family needs, especially if it conflicts with their professional commitments.
Flexibility: A study suggests women find it challenging to ignore family demands while working from home.
Positive Outcomes for Women’s Careers
Despite these challenges, the research does not conclude that remote work is negative for women. In fact, working from home has significantly benefited women’s careers by providing greater flexibility, helping to bridge the gender gap in many industries.
The dataset analyzed stemmed from a project focusing on the pandemic’s workplace impacts, involving detailed interviews with 136 individuals. The recent study narrowed its focus to 20 participants to gather insights on gender-based differences.
