A grandmother decided to leave her nine-to-five council job in the UK to work remotely for a business in Barbados, and she’s never been happier. Jacqueline Johnson, 60, made the move to work for her son Justin, 40, as a social media and contract manager in his scalp micropigmentation business.
She was able to make the transition in 2022 through a Welcome Stamp Visa – a 12-month visa that allows people to relocate and work remotely.
Despite the idyllic setting, Jacqueline finds that life in Barbados consists of work, bills, and chores, but she enjoys the freedom of choosing between spending weekends at the beach or pool and appreciates the community and sunshine on the island.
Jacqueline has embraced the relaxed lifestyle of Barbados, working from 7am to 1pm with less stress, observing that locals don’t get anxious about trivial things like Britons do.

Having extended her visa twice, Jacqueline intends to stay in Barbados long-term as it suits her lifestyle, encouraging others to take a chance and try living abroad.
Jacqueline shared, “It has become my normal life now – while I may live in a different country, I still have responsibilities like chores, bills, and work.
She mentioned that she enjoys the flexibility of deciding her activities on weekends in Barbados, whether it’s spending time at the beach or pool or meeting up with friends.
In comparison to her previous job at North and West Northamptonshire Council, Jacqueline appreciates the new challenges and lifestyle working remotely in Barbados brings.
