Insights from 1.7M Posts on X, Threads, and Bluesky

Analyzing 1.7 million posts across social media platforms like X, Threads, and Bluesky reveals some intriguing insights about engagement differences, illustrating each platform’s unique characteristics. With each platform striving for different identities—X as the global square, Threads as a friendly community, and Bluesky anchoring user control—understanding their engagement metrics can enhance your strategy.

Despite their distinctive goals, our analysis showed a surprising consistency in median engagement. Posts on X, Threads, and Bluesky typically garnered four interactions, unifying them in a baseline metric. However, diving deeper into engagement patterns reveals that their dynamics are strikingly different, particularly regarding virality and audience behavior.

The engagement variance signifies that a uniform social media strategy won’t suffice in 2025’s evolving landscape. Knowing where to post can clarify expected outcomes, making personalized platform strategies crucial.

Unveiling the Data: A Closer Look at Engagement Patterns

This extensive analysis involved 1.7 million posts from 56,000 participants on X, Threads, and Bluesky. Our focus was to ensure a fair comparison of engagement trends. When focusing on total interactions—likes, comments, and reposts—we found that understanding what these numbers imply is key.

For example, prior studies suggested higher engagement rates on Threads compared to X. Yet, overall engagements tell us both platforms see similar interaction numbers. Engagement rates consider the proportion of interactions to views, whereas total engagements account for all interactions. Thus, context and specific objectives define which metric suits your analysis best.

Exploring Engagement Dynamics: How X, Threads, and Bluesky Compare

Throughout 2024, posts on X, Threads, and Bluesky typically resonated with four or fewer engagements. Yet February 2025 exposed some shifts: Threads rose to a median of five, while Bluesky dropped to three. These numbers suggest disparate momentum and are reflective of how external dynamics influence engagement.

Scale of Engagement Across Platforms

The average number of engagements sheds more light on platform performance than median values. While X enjoys an average of 328 interactions, Threads and Bluesky trail behind, with 58 and 21 respectively. This discrepancy highlights the varied potential for virality depending on platform norms and user behavior.
