Comparison of Engagement: 1.2M AI-Assisted vs. Human Posts

In the ever-evolving world of digital marketing, understanding the engagement rate of 1.2 million AI-assisted posts versus those crafted by humans alone has become increasingly vital. This exploration delves into how AI-enhanced content fares against traditional human-only content creation, bringing to light decisive insights for marketers everywhere.

Since the integration of our AI Assistant in Buffer, over 55,000 users have leveraged this tool to craft new, innovative content, repurpose existing material, and consistently brainstorm fresh ideas. While its impact during creation is undeniable, the real question lies in the performance of such AI-assisted content compared to purely human-generated posts.

By delving into our internal data, we analyzed the engagement rates on platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Threads, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. The goal was to uncover how AI-powered content stacks up against conventional human efforts in boosting engagement. Our discoveries promise some surprising revelations—let’s dive deeper into the numbers.

It’s important to note, our analysis excludes Instagram, focusing solely on Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Threads, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube.

Delving into the Methodology

To investigate the engagement rate of these AI-powered versus human-only posts, we assessed 1.2 million pieces of content spread across various platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and others.

For each participant, we calculated the median engagement rate, aiming to provide a fair comparison between AI-assisted posts (crafted or enhanced by Buffer’s AI tool) and non-AI-assisted content. This method allowed us to control for outliers and other variables that could skew the data.

After filtering through the data, we identified around 15,000 users who had created both AI-assisted and traditional posts. This enabled us to derive valuable insights by breaking down the median engagement rates both overall and per platform.

Considering Caveats

While interpreting the results, consider these potential biases:

  1. Healthy User Bias: Active users inherently more engaged might skew rates, suggesting the enhanced performance may partly result from their general activity levels rather than AI alone.
  2. Methodological Limitations: Our study included only individuals using both AI-assisted and non-AI methods, potentially excluding a wider portion of our user base.

Discoveries Unmasked

The data evidently showed that AI-enhanced content often exhibited higher median engagement rates than manually created posts across nearly all platforms.

Aggregating data across platforms, the median engagement rate for traditional content settled at 4.82%, while AI-assisted counterparts reached 5.87%.

This enhancement suggests AI-supported content could be better tailored to audience preferences. However, distinct variations emerged upon examining individual platforms.

Platforms like Threads, Twitter/X, Pinterest, and TikTok showed a notable uptick in engagement with AI content. Interestingly, YouTube and LinkedIn only showed marginal improvements.

Exploring Platform-Specific Insights

Threads Engagement Surge

Here, AI-assisted content excelled uniquely, leaping from a 5.56% engagement rate on non-AI content to an impressive 11.11% when AI technologies were applied. AI Impact on Threads

The Facebook Effect

For Facebook, engagement scores saw a boost from 4.89% in non-AI posts to 6.13% with AI interventions. AI Impact on Facebook

Volume Meets Consistency for Greater Engagement

A key hypothesis emerges: AI augments the capability to produce content swiftly, increasing posting consistency and thus engagement potential. Our internal metrics reveal AI users publish more frequently than those relying solely on human creativity.

By streamlining production processes, AI raises the likelihood of crafting posts that resonate, leveraging the compounded effect of consistent presence in social algorithms’ eyes. With Buffer’s AI Assistant, creators can preserve even the quality needed to maintain engagement.
