It might have been the heartfelt welcome from Chris at reception, who made me feel like the center of the universe. Or maybe it was the striking blend of modern and historical architecture in the building. Perhaps it was the vibrant energy from people hot-desking and engaging in conversations around me.
These moments highlight the incredible power of being connected to people, a notion that Gina London and many others resonate with deeply. When I’m not traveling to support clients, I work from home and often miss those spontaneous interactions with colleagues.
Surrounded by the buzz of human activity, I felt reinvigorated. Later, I spoke with Claire Halliday, co-founder of a bustling hub, about what makes their space exceptional.
Claire echoed my sentiments: it’s about the magic that happens when people share a physical environment.
The Synergy of Togetherness
“We believe that iron sharpens iron,” Claire asserts. “Put people in a room together, and they refine each other, leading to extraordinary outcomes.” This perspective aligns with the incredible power of being connected to people, as evidenced by recent trends in hybrid and remote work environments.
Amazon recently announced that by January 2025, all employees must return to the office full-time. For many, this mandate appears as a step backward after the flexibility of remote work. However, is it truly regressive, or is there an irreplaceable value in physical proximity?
According to Claire, being together in person holds immense advantages that are challenging to replicate online.
‘It was a sad time for someone like me, who loves being around people’
She highlights the undeniable benefits of connecting in person – benefits that face-to-face interaction uniquely provides.

“There’s a misconception that if you can work from home, you should,” she says. “But in-person interactions fuel creativity and collaboration in ways virtual meets can’t.”
For many solo entrepreneurs, the isolation of working from home can be overwhelming.
“Lots of individuals confined to one-bedroom apartments find it lonely,” Claire notes. “Engaging with a diverse group opens up new insights and thinking avenues.”
Bridging Generational Gaps
Claire also discussed the widening gap between younger and seasoned employees, which is heightened in virtual settings.
“Younger workers, especially pandemic-era university students, lack essential in-person experiences,” Claire observes.
“This gap creates distance between generations. While virtual is functional, face-to-face is irreplaceable for true understanding and connection,” she adds.
“Virtual interactions can’t fully convey thoughts and emotions. Trust, the foundation of any team, is built through in-person encounters.”
Returning to In-Person Work
While Amazon’s full-time office return may not appeal to all, Claire’s experience at Ormeau Labs suggests it might be what people need.
“In-person connection enriches lives through learning, creation, and growth,” she asserts.
Claire acknowledges the success of some remote work setups but stands by her belief.
“The reality is dawning – while home offices have merits, nothing compares to the room’s dynamic energy for innovation and collaboration.”
As companies ponder remote versus in-office work, one truth stands out: human connection is paramount. It goes beyond productivity; it builds community, a pursuit technology alone cannot fulfill.
