Google Cloud unveils its latest blockchain initiative: an Ethereum-compatible Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service aimed at streamlining blockchain development and enhancing interaction with blockchain data.
Announced on September 17, Google Cloud’s new blockchain RPC service enables decentralized applications (DApps) to efficiently communicate with blockchain networks. Initially supporting the Ethereum mainnet and its testnets, this service offers a cost-effective solution compared to traditional node infrastructure management.
An RPC allows one program to request services from another program located on a separate network. In the blockchain world, RPCs are essential for DApps to interact with blockchain data and perform tasks like transaction validation, data retrieval, and node communication effectively. However, RPC reliability has been a pain point in the blockchain sector. Delays or errors in RPCs can disrupt the functioning of DApps, which need to handle transactions and data requests instantly.
Addressing Common RPC Issues with Google Cloud
High network traffic or sudden spikes in transaction volumes often lead to disruptions. This has been evident with platforms like ZkSync, Solana, and Manta, which have faced challenges during peak demand periods. Google Cloud’s blockchain RPC service aims to mitigate these issues by leveraging its robust infrastructure to ensure better reliability.
Benefits for Ethereum Developers
Google’s service is fully compatible with the JSON-RPC standard, simplifying the integration process for Ethereum developers. By simply changing their RPC endpoints, developers can seamlessly integrate with their DApps with minimal coding required. Additionally, the service offers a free tier that supports up to 100 requests per second and 1 million requests per day, making it ideal for both startups and large enterprises involved in real-time, data-heavy applications.
Kyle Quintal, Head of Engineering at web3 analytics firm 0xArc, noted that the response times provided by Google Cloud’s RPC service are exceptionally fast. Adhering to the Ethereum Improvement Proposal EIP-1474 standards has encouraged many firms, including 0xArc, to integrate this service into their systems. EIP-1474 defines standardized RPC methods for Ethereum nodes, ensuring efficient and reliable performance.
Currently, the blockchain RPC service is available globally as a preview, with plans to extend support to additional blockchains in the coming year. This new initiative aligns with Google Cloud’s broader strategy to deepen its involvement in the blockchain sector.
Over the years, Google Cloud has partnered with numerous blockchain projects and platforms such as EigenLayer, Aptos, Flare, and Polygon, continuously reinforcing its commitment to advancing blockchain technology.
