The UK banking landscape is evolving significantly, with efforts underway to expand the number of banking hubs in response to the closure of traditional bank branches. With the full list of 76 UK banking hubs marking a new trend following the shutdown of 215 banks, it’s evident that the industry is pivoting to meet modern financial needs.
According to LINK, the national ATM network, around 215 bank branches are set to close by August 2015 due to the increasing shift toward online services. However, this shift doesn’t cater to everyone, particularly communities such as the elderly who still depend on in-person banking. In light of this, banking hubs are emerging as a vital solution.
Functioning through the Post Office, banking hubs enable customers to perform a range of banking activities including check deposits, cash withdrawals, balance inquiries, and bill payments. This development aims to bridge the gap created by the decline in traditional bank branches.
In a significant initiative supported by the Treasury, major UK banks have committed to opening up to 350 banking hubs over the next five years. By the end of 2025, 230 hubs are expected to be operational, with 120 slated to open before the current parliamentary term concludes.
City Minister Tulip Siddiq has praised this initiative, noting, “Banking hubs are a lifeline for local communities that have lost their final bank branch. I’m confident that the banks will deliver on the commitment made today and take a more active approach to meeting the needs of local communities.”
At present, there are 76 banking hubs across Britain. LINK and Cash Access UK plan to increase this number to 100 by the end of the year. In some regions, temporary hubs will be set up before permanent facilities are established. Lisa McGreevy, Project Manager for Cash Access UK, said, “The temporary hub is a provision we provide prior to the permanent hub, as the agreements for these can take some time.
“By providing a temporary hub, we can ensure that the community has access to their banking requirements in a much shorter timeframe. This will then remain open until the permanent hub opens.”
