Evolution of Social Media Since 2022

Since 2022, the landscape of social media has undergone significant changes, with a more fragmented and diverse array of platforms emerging. Social media use has evolved dramatically, and today we see a plethora of choices catering to distinct interests. Notably, platforms such as Bluesky, Threads, and Mastodon have established their unique niches. At the same time, traditional giants like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube continue to maintain their dominance. This evolution highlights how people no longer confine themselves to the most prominent platforms but rather seek out venues that align with their personal values, interests, and objectives.

Our recent analysis aimed to understand where today’s social media users invest their time and resources. We examined platform growth, trends, and engagement changes since 2022 to paint a comprehensive picture of this transformation. With data sourced from Buffer’s platform connections, we offer insights into how these trends align with broader social media dynamics, even if they primarily represent Buffer’s audience, which includes creators, small business owners, and social media professionals.

This post will delve into the evolution of social media use and how it has influenced today’s digital strategies. By diving into the details, you will gain insights into optimizing your social media approach to remain relevant in this fast-changing landscape.

Analyzing the Evolution of Social Media: Our Methodology

We utilized Buffer’s extensive data, examining millions of channel connections from 2022 to 2024 across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Twitter/X, and Google Business. Our analysis measured total platform connections, active user engagement, and the growth trajectories—allowing us to spot significant trends in the social media sphere.

Key Findings:

  • Bluesky and Threads experience rapid growth: Bluesky jumped from 1.6K connections in July 2024 to 27K, while Threads has skyrocketed from 3.3K in June 2024 to over 23K.
  • TikTok sees substantial adoption: Emerging as a rapidly adopted channel, its connections soared from 779 in June 2022 to 276K today.
  • Facebook maintains dominance: With 1.85M total connections, marking a 70% growth since 2022, Facebook continues as a robust choice for a broad reach.
  • Pinterest and Instagram gain steadily: Pinterest has doubled its users, and Instagram shows a growth of nearly 95%.
  • Twitter/X lags in growth: While stable, Twitter/X has increased connections by only 36.9% since 2022.
  • YouTube Shorts quietly builds momentum: From 5.6K users in mid-2023, the platform now garners 147K connections.

This data helps us interpret where social media is headed, establishing a compelling narrative about current trends.

Deep Diving into Platform Growth

Facebook: The Most Common Choice

1.82M total connections and 108K active connections.

Despite newer competitors, Facebook saw a 70% increase since 2022, growing from 1.08M to 1.85M connections.

Social Media Use Evolution Data on Facebook

Twitter/X: Steady Growth

1.39M total connections with 81.2K active users.

Since 2022, its user base has expanded by 36.9%, from 1.02M to 1.39M total connections.

Social Media Use Changes on Twitter

The rise of platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts marks an era of video dominance. Moreover, the burgeoning interest in decentralized networks such as Bluesky and Threads indicates a shift towards niche, community-driven engagement.

The shifting dynamics highlight the opportunities that platforms like Pinterest offer. Although slower in growth, Pinterest represents an untapped reservoir for businesses seeking to engage audiences poised for discovery and purchase.

As networks evolve, the growing overlap between platform functionalities paves the way for more cross-posting opportunities, empowering creators and brand managers to maximize content reach efficiently.

Leverage the insights from Buffer’s data by focusing on universal content formats, optimizing content quality over platform loyalty, and skillfully repurposing content. Integrating these strategies will help you stay ahead in an ever-evolving social media environment.
