In deciding where to enjoy your retirement, the choice isn’t always clear. While some may opt for downsizing in a more budget-friendly location or to be closer to family, others desire the comfort and memories of their current home. This concept, known as “aging in place,” is a popular choice for many retirees.

Opting to age in place can be financially beneficial, particularly if you have already paid off your mortgage. However, as we grow older, activities we now do with ease may become more challenging. Thus, if aging in place is the plan, making necessary home upgrades to accommodate changing needs is crucial.

Here, GOBankingRates consults with experts in real estate and home renovation to highlight six home upgrades retirees should consider if they decide to age in place, and the estimated costs associated with these modifications.

Accessible Bathing with Walk-In Showers

As we age, maintaining balance or strength might become a concern, potentially increasing the risk of falls, especially in areas like the bathroom. Consequently, incorporating a walk-in shower is a wise choice for safety.

“Transforming an outdated tub into a walk-in or curbless shower can significantly reduce fall risks,” remarks Michael Valente, co-founder and CEO at Renovation Sells. “This option is more accessible, eliminating the need to step over a high tub ledge.”

According to Angi, installing a walk-in shower comes at a price range of $1,150 to $8,000.

Install Comfort-Height Toilets for Ease

Rising from a seated position can become progressively difficult with age, which is especially challenging with standard low toilets. Therefore, upgrading to comfort-height toilets could greatly enhance convenience and comfort.

“Comfort-height toilets are easier on the knees and back due to their additional height,” explains Valente. This upgrade is cost-effective, with installation fees ranging from $185 to $400, as per Home Depot.

Installing Safety: Grab Bars

A priority upgrade should be the inclusion of grab bars, especially in bathrooms. “Grab bars provide crucial support where it’s most needed,” states Valente. “Selecting matching fixtures ensures both functionality and aesthetics.” The average cost per grab bar is $150 to $400.

Leverage Lever-Style Door Handles

As individuals age, they might experience reduced mobility, such as from arthritis. Replacing traditional door knobs with lever-style handles is prudent for easier use.

Erwin Miciano, founder of Semi Homes, notes, “Lever handles require less force and can be operated with the elbow if needed, offering functionality without sacrificing style.” On Amazon, a six-pack of lever-style knobs costs approximately $68.

Optimizing Energy with Enhanced Insulation

For retirees, adequate home insulation is essential, particularly under the floors. “Poor insulation leads to drafts and spikes in energy bills,” says Gordon Chalk of Next Level Underfloor Heating and Screed Solutions. Improved insulation provides warmth, cost savings, and comfort. According to Homewyse, floor insulation costs hover between $2.99 and $3.05 per square foot.

Home Accessibility: Widening Doorways

Franklin Ivy, with Sound Homebuyers, endorses widening doorways to accommodate future mobility aids like wheelchairs. “Wider doorways ensure easy navigation despite mobility challenges,” observes Ivy.

Reflecting on these pivotal home upgrades can empower retirees to remain in their beloved homes safely and comfortably for the years to come.
